DEQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What paperwork is required for a septic submittal?

Upon receipt of a permit application, DEQ requires a Notice of Intent to Discharge and three (3) site plans.

How long does it take for a septic design review?

Review time depends on workload and staffing levels, but the average turn around time is five (5) to ten (10) days.

Why do I have to pay for a septic design review?

In accordance with Title 7 of the Pima County Code, fees for plan reviews and final inspections are due when an application for approval is submitted to the department, and are not refundable.

Once my septic design is approved, how long do I have to build it?

The Authorization to Construct is valid for two (2) years.

What is a percolation test?

A percolation test measures how quickly water moves through the soil. It is measured in minutes per inch and determines the suitability of a particular site for septic system installation. Soil through which water moves very slowly or very rapidly typically cannot accommodate a conventional septic system.

What determines the size of a septic system?

The bedroom count is the primary determinate of minimum septic tank size and daily design flow. For a specific bedroom count, the minimum size depends on whether a threshold fixture unit count is exceeded or not. As an example, a three (3) bedroom home with twenty-one (21) fixture units or less requires a 1000-gallon septic tank with a daily design flow of 450 gallons per day. However, a three (3) bedroom home with greater than twenty-one (21) fixture units requires a 1250 gallon septic tank and the daily design flow required is 600 gallons.

What size lot do I need to install a septic system?

Pursuant to Pima County Code 7.21.027, the minimum lot size required is one (1) acre (43,560 sq.ft.)

What is the set back requirement between my septic system and a well?

In accordance with Arizona Administrative Code Title 18, Chapter 9, the minimum set back from a septic to a well is one hundred (100) feet.

How often should I have my septic tank pumped?

While maintenance is depended upon use, the industry average is every three (3) to five (5) years.
